Merck Korea celebrated the 350th anniversary of Merck KGaAs at an event in Seoul, reaffirming that the mission of improving human health drives its healthcare division.

The German multinational pharmaceutical, chemical and life sciences firm, since its foundation in 1668, has branched out to become one of the oldest science and technology companies worldwide through continuous innovation, said Glenn Young, managing director of Merck Korea.

Merck operates in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania with major research and development centers in Darmstadt, Boston, Tokyo, and Beijing.

Its biopharmaceutical business primarily focuses on developing innovative medical and biopharmaceutical therapies for cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease fertility, and multiple sclerosis, the firm said. Young noted that the firm is focusing on three areas in particular.

“In the healthcare business, we have a broad portfolio products. The main focus is immuno-oncology therapies, multiple sclerosis, and fertility treatments,” Young said. “In these three key areas, we’re trying to deliver improvements to human health and innovation.”

Of the three major business areas of life science, performance materials, and healthcare, the company noted that 46 percent of its sales last year came from healthcare.
