Professor Lee Jin-wook of the department of breast and endocrine surgery at Seoul National University Hospital demonstrated the latest thyroid cancer surgery called the “oral endoscopic resection,” at the 13th Endocrine Surgery International Workshop held in India.

Oral endoscopic resection is an operation that removes a thyroid tumor by placing an endoscopic surgical instrument in the mucous membrane between the lips and the lower gum, featuring no scarring, no pain, and fewer scars.

Professor Lee removed thyroid tumors from a 50-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man under the observant eyes of the local medical staff. While the female’s tumor was on the left side, the male was in the right thyroid with 3 to 4 cm-sized tumor.

Lee has proved that oral endoscopic resection is effective on both left and right side of the thyroid as well as both sexes. "I am delighted to introduce a new surgical technique to Indian doctors," Lee said. "I will do my best to develop surgical procedures that will help future patients.”

Professor Lee Jin-wook’s operation received attention in Indian newspapers.
