The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) started the “14th Training Course on Social Health Insurance” at the Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel on Tuesday.

Forty-two healthcare and health insurance policy officials from 24 countries representing Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East and Oceania are participating in the 10-day educational program.

The training course started in 2004 as an international event held in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, WHO/WPRO (World Health Organization Western Pacific Region Office) and UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific).

National Health Insurance Service started the “14th Training Course on Social Health Insurance” at Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel on Tuesday.

NHIS has been running this training course to share operational experience in the Korean health insurance system with foreign nations and to support the development of health insurance systems in developing countries.

It also provides a systematic curriculum that encompasses academic theories and examples of domestic and international operations, focusing on the major issues of universal health care (UHC), a major concern of developing countries.

The training program is designed to help professionals from international organizations such as World Bank (WB), WHO, and Asian Development Bank (ADB) meet the needs of UHC and international sustainable development goals (SDGs), a sustainable financing system, and a purchasing strategy for efficient medical services, health, and financing strategies.

The participants will also have the opportunity to understand the Korean medical and pharmaceutical industry by taking a tour of the health care field in Korea such as the NHIS, Ilsan Hospital, and the Green Cross.

During the past 13 years, the training program has won recognition as a successful course for 540 trainees from 56 countries.

"We intend to continue to develop the international health insurance training program as a representative program for the health promotion area and to provide developing countries with UHC to their citizens by providing a practical curriculum for trainees,” Chairman Sung Sang-chul of NHIS said. “We will actively participate in the efforts of the international community.”
