The Seoul National University Hospital said it has installed a modular isolation ward at its training institute in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, which the hospital recently turned into a temporary COVID-19 center on March 5.

The Kolon Group donated the ward.

The facility has since been used to treat mild and asymptomatic new corona virus patients. It can accommodate up to 115 patients, and about 60 infected people are now are staying there.

The hospital said it needs to prepare sufficient number of isolated wards to prepare for sudden increase of outbreaks as well as to treat other outpatients. “This is why we installed the modular negative pressure rooms at our training institute in Mungyeong, one of the areas hit hardest by COVID-19,” the hospital said in a news release.

The 24 hospital rooms at the ward are equipped with the same negative pressure equipment and inspection devices to the existing treatment centers. The rooms also have a system for patients to receive remote treatment from their physicians.

Kolon said that the group can expand the modular isolation ward, now single-story building, to an eight-story structure if necessary.

SNUH Director Kim Yeon-soo said, “We have installed the modular isolation rooms to prepare for an unexpected shortage of treatment space, and the ward will fully function as a temporary COVID-19 relief center.”
