The 2019 International Congress of Diabetes and Metabolism will kick off its three-day run at the Grand Hilton Seoul, from Oct. 11-13.

Sponsored by the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA), ICDM 2019 celebrates its ninth anniversary of conducting a discussion on diabetes and endocrine systems. The conference will attract 1,300 participants from 30 countries, 187 pre-registrants from overseas, 483 international abstract registrations, and 41 foreign lecturers. It has also attracted 107 local abstracts.

The keynote speech on Friday will be given by Professor Graeme Bell of the University of Chicago, under the title "Insulin-Unfinished Story."

Bell has been studying the characteristics of genes that are important for glucose metabolism, including insulin, glucagon, and glucose transporters. In a keynote speech, he will present the results of his lifetime study on insulin and pancreatic beta cells.

On Saturday, Professor Vivian Fonseca of Tulane University will make a keynote speech titled, "What we can learn from cardiovascular safety research?"

Professor Fonseca, former president of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and editor-in-chief of the Diabetes Care Journal, has been researching the importance of the inflammatory response in the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications and in the development of cardiovascular diseases. She has also won the Banting Medal from the ADA.

This year’s conference will have 162 lectures delivered at 22 main symposiums in six areas -- diabetes epidemiology, drug therapy, diabetes management, primary studies, intermediate studies and complications – as well as 10 session presentations and 398 poster exhibitions.

Topics of interest include the importance of fatty liver disease in diabetes and obesity, the mechanism of insulin resistance and systemic inflammatory responses, the relationship between diabetes and heart failure, the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors, the current status of precision medicine in the field of diabetes, and the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.

The conference, which publishes annual statistics on diabetes, also plans to produce and release fact sheets that show the progress of various complications experienced by people with diabetes, compiled by National Health Insurance Service

Data show that neuropathy decreased in microvascular complications while nephropathy and retinopathy increased. End-stage renal failure is also on the rise, but proliferative retinopathy and lower extremity amputation showed a decrease.

Regarding hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, cerebral infarction, and acute myocardial infarction, the association's data showed that it has been decreasing since 2008, and hospitalizations due to heart failure or peripheral arterial disease have been increasing during the period.

Also, the mortality rate of diabetics is generally decreasing. Deaths due to cancer, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, and heart disease are falling, while deaths due to pneumonia are increasing.

In 2015, the six major causes of death were cancer (30.3 percent), heart disease (10.5 percent), diabetes (10.5 percent), cerebrovascular disease (8.9 percent), pneumonia (5.0 percent), and hypertension diseases (1.5 percent).

"ICDM, hosted by the KDA, has now become an international conference held in Asia," KDA Chairman Park Kyong-soo said.
