Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) said that it launched the second-term operation of the Sheikh Khalifa Speciality Hospital (SKSH) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday. SNUH will run SKSH for the next five years.

SNUH won the renewal of the consignment operation agreement from the UAE government to run SKSH last month. It won the first five-year consignment operation right in August 2014. The Korean hospital has since run the UAE institution by dispatching medical workers and applying its healthcare system.

The UAE hospital is a 248-bed, nonprofit public hospital focusing on cancer, heart disease, childhood illness, emergency medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and neurological disorders.

A total of 176 Korean doctors, nurses, and other medical worker are working at the hospital, along with 1,000 international staff members.

“We have treated 103,600 outpatients, 5,000 hospitalized patients and conducted about 2,000 surgeries,” SNUH said in a news release. “As a result, many UAE residents, who had previously gone abroad to receive advanced medical treatment, were able to receive medical care in their home country.”

With the renewal of the contract, SNUH plans to enhance its operation by strengthening the existing medical services, such as cutting-edge heart valve treatment and one-stop breast cancer treatment.

“The successful operation of SKSH was possible thanks to the effort of numerous employees,” said Abdulhadi Al Ahababi, deputy director-general of the medical office of UAE. “Notably, the role of SNUH medical staff had a great impact.”

SNUH President and CEO Kim Yon-su said, “SNUH and SKSH will work together to leave an example of an overseas advance made by a Korean medical institution.”
