Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) said that it has built a smart surgical system and education platform that integrates functions essential for medical staff in actual hospital settings.

An overview of the hospital’s new smart surgical room

“The introduction is significant as the system was done without installing any package solutions provided by multinational medical device companies,” the hospital said.

SNUBH's smart surgical system has a preset function that allows the setting of surgical instruments according to the latest trends, having a smart touch panel that provides control over the entire operating room environment.

The hospital has linked some of the functions to the smart speech recognition system, which in turn, allows medical staff to concentrate on the patient and the operation itself rather than on the environment. SNUBH said it also had integrated the latest medical equipment into its platform.

The new devices include a 4K operative endoscopy that can perform image-guided surgery using near infrared rays, which is four times brighter than conventional full-high-definition (HD) and a display that simultaneously supports 3D stereoscopic viewing of the syringe field.

The platform also introduces a telepathology system that connects the operating room and the pathology laboratory, allowing medical staffs to share their opinions in real time.

“Rather than using a single solution from a global company, the hospital’s new smart surgery room is optimized to reflect the value of an educational platform and the opinions of the hospital’s medical professionals,” SNUBH President and CEO Jheon Sang-hoon said. “Although the latest equipment can be introduced at any hospital, we believe that the experience and know-how of the medical staff for advanced surgery cannot be followed by short-term effort or capital.”
