Korea has been ranked at the 15 place in the world by having about 3,600 medical science articles included in the top 1 percent regarding citation by global journals, a state agency said. The nation took the 21st place in clinical medicine, and the 23rd place in psychiatry and psychology, from 2011-2015.

Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning한국과학기술기획평가원(KISTEP) has recently released a report titled “Comparative analysis of top 1 percent of highly cited paper (HCP) in major countries.” The agency based its report on Essential Science Indicators (ESI) DB from Canadian financial information provider Thomson Reuters and a report from National Research Foundation of Korea한국연구재단(NRF).

HCP is referring to papers included in the upper 1 percent of Science Citation Index (SCI) theses published in the last 10 years, based on the same publishing year and the number of citations in each category, KISTEP said. HCP has high academic influence (or quality level) within related academic communities, it added.

According to the analysis, the United States maintained a dominant position, with 69,506 papers in HCP, and the number of Korean papers has risen from 1.9 percent in 2005 to 3.2 percent in 2015, recording a 1.7 times increase during the period.

The numbers of HCP in Korea’s medical field from 2005-2015 were 490 in clinical medicine (21st place) and 23 (23rd place) in psychiatry and psychology. The global total of HCP in clinical medicine and psychiatry and psychology were 24,707 and 3,662 papers, respectively. The United States accounted for 63 percent (15,461) of the former and 67 percent of the latter (2,441).

In the medical and pharmaceutical area, Korea was ranked at seventh place in chemistry (681 papers), 16th place in pharmacy-toxicology (93 articles), 16th place in biology-biochemistry (125 articles),19th place in molecular biology-genetics (95 papers), 22nd place in immunology (22 papers), 25th place in microbiology (17 papers), and 18th place in the fusion area (seven papers) whose importance has been growing.

When it comes to the recent five years (2011-2015), the shares each category took in Korea’s HCP were 0.67 percent for clinical medicine, 0.59 percent for pharmacy-toxicology, 0.43 percent for immunology and 0.84 percent for molecular biology-genetics. Among those which has shown sharp increases in their shares were computer science (from 0.22 to 0.81 percent), physics (from 0.74 to 1.24 percent) and psychiatry-psychology (from 0.23 to 0.81 percent)

The report analyzed 22 areas, and the U.S. showed overwhelming shares in all of them except for engineering science, in which China excelled all others. China’s advance was also remarkable.
