About 37,000 medical institutions were using 88,000 X-ray devices in Korea, government data showed.

A total of 84,273 people were working in places where diagnostic radiation generators were installed.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) published the “Annual report of individual’s exposure to radiation among radiation-related workers in medical institutions in 2017,” to protect the workers from radiation hazards.

Radiation-related workers are those who work where diagnostic radiation generators are installed and are engaged in radiation-related work such as management and operation of diagnostic radiation generators. They include doctors, nurses, and radiology technicians.

According to the KCDC’s report, the number of radiation-related workers recorded 84,273 last year, which increased by 6 percent annually on average in the past five years.

The annual radiation exposure on average was 0.46 millisieverts (mSv), which was 1/100 of the annual limit (50 mSv).

Six hundred and eighty people, or 0.8 percent of the total radiation-related workers, exceeded 5mSv per quarter. The government has been controlling the percentage below 1 percent in the past five years.

As of March, 37,745 medical institutions installed 88,294 X-ray devices. By hospital type, clinics had 69,070 units, hospitals, 11,229 units, and tertiary hospitals, 7,995 units.

To reduce the radiation exposure, the KCDC advised that medical institutions to regularly provide safety management education and comply with safety rules during X-ray shootings.
