GE Healthcare said Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ewha Womans University Medical Center to cooperate on establishing a smart hospital.

Ewha Womans University Medical Center Director Moon Byung-in and GE Healthcare Korea CEO Francis Van Parys signed an MoU at the Ewha Womans University Medical Center in Mok 5-dong, Seoul, Monday

Ewha Womans University Medical Center employed a new concept of patient-centered hospitals by designing its wards with no high-end rooms. The hospital ward includes only standard rooms, which can hold three patients, and an intensive ICU room, for one patient.

The hospital will also introduce a “clinical integration room” along with GE Healthcare for the first time in Korea as part of its smart hospital construction project. The clinical integration room monitors a variety of biomedical data generated from patients in the hospital through a patient monitoring device and delivers it to the medical staff in real time.

Such real-time information enables quick and accurate treatment by optimizing the response time required for the treatment of the patient in emergencies. Also, the integrated management and the effective utilization of patient information can improve the diagnosis and treatment efficiency as well as reduce medical costs.

The clinical integration room will also store an integrated electrocardiograms management system installed in the intensive care unit, emergency room and hospital wards, which will automatically manage and analyze the patient’s data.

This will, in turn, helps clinicians make quick and accurate decisions in diagnosing heart diseases, the hospital said.

“To quickly and accurately diagnose and treat an emergency situation in an infectious disease control center or a critical intensive care management area, it is important that a patient's abnormal condition is rapidly transmitted to the medical staff through real-time remote monitoring of the patient's condition,” Ewha Womans University Medical Center Director Moon Byung-in said.

By establishing the clinical integration room, it will contribute to improving patient safety and treatment outcome by real-time information of all patients in the hospital and placing workforce and equipment in the right place as soon as possible, he added.

GE Healthcare Korea CEO Francis Van Parys also said, “GE Healthcare will use its customized solutions that enable the improvement of the efficiency of the hospital operation and the improvement of the treatment quality in helping Ewha Womans University Medical Center become a leading hospital in Korea.”
