The Global Symposium on Ketogenic Therapies for Neurological Disorders (KETO) will hold its sixth conference at Jeju International Convention Center from Oct. 5-9.

The KETO symposium is the world's only conference that gathers experts to share and discuss know-how on ketogenic dietary therapy. The therapy has a variety of treatment implications, including brain tumors, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, autism and cancer.

The symposium, which began in the U.S. in 2008, has taken place in various countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada. This is the first time that the symposium has come to Asia after the international community recognized academic papers published by Professors Kim Heong-dong and Kang Hoon-chul of Yonsei University Medical School.

The symposium consists of two pre-congress workshops, three special lectures, five main sessions and 12 small sessions. It also has a special session for the clinical nutritionist and the patients’ families suffering from various brain-related diseases.

A total of 450 people from 47 countries and 250 from host Korea have registered to attend the conference. Also, 91 experts, including world-renowned scholars in pediatric epilepsy and diet therapy from 21 countries around the world, plan to present a lecture at the symposium.

“Korea has reached the level of advanced countries in the treatment of epilepsy, but there are still many epilepsy patients and families suffering from ignorance and prejudice against epilepsy,” Professor Kim said. “I hope that the conference will serve as a good opportunity for people to understand the ketogenic diet therapy, which has not been well known yet.”

Clinical nutritionists and patient’s family members will also participate in the symposium so that they can learn about new research results and exchange information on the latest ketone-producing dietary therapies.
