GBSA CEO Han Eui-noung and Dongkook Pharmaceutical R&D department head Song Sae-hyung hold up the technology transfer agreement at the GBSA Bio Center in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, Wednesday.

Dongkook said Thursday that it has signed a technology transfer contract with Gyeonggi-do Business & Science Accelerator (GBSA) for a new drinkable solution for the treatment of osteoporosis.

GBSA Bio Center, which received support from Gyeonggi Province, had been developing a compound liquid formulation technology for the treatment of osteoporosis with Dongkook Pharmaceutical Research Institute since 2017.

With the rapid increase in osteoporosis populations due to population aging, the liquid form osteoporosis treatment, which regulates calcium and bone metabolism in the body, is attracting the interest of the pharmaceutical industry as seniors who cannot swallow pills and capsules can easily drink the treatment instead.

GBSA expects that the transfer of the technology will once again demonstrate the effectiveness of the Gyeonggi Province’s Advanced Technology Support for Pharmaceutical and Bio-Industry project.

“The bio center’s technology is the first compound liquid formulation technology for a drug that uses bisphosphonate as its main ingredient,” a Dongkook Pharmaceutical Research Institute official said.

Osteoporosis is one of the chronic diseases that require continuous drug use after the onset of the disease. As of the fourth quarter in 2015, the total market for osteoporosis treatment in Korea stood at about 175 billion won ($157.2 million).

The worldwide osteoporosis market is growing at an annual average rate of 9.2 percent and is expected to grow from about $8.4 billion in 2015 to about $40 billion in 2019.
