Chong Kun Dang, Dongkook lead functional foods

Chong Kun Dang Healthcare, a subsidiary of Chong Kun Dang, topped the local sales of functional foods in the first half of this year, industry data showed.

The second place went to Dongkook Pharmaceutical’s brand Nature’s Vitamin Shop, followed by Sanofi-Aventis Korea’s Cenovis.

According to Nielsen Korea’s data on the distribution channels except for pharmacies, brands of Chung Kun Dang, Dongkook, and Sanofi sold the most in the first half.

The combined sales of the top 18 companies amounted to 183.6 billion won ($164.8 million) in the first half. Among them, Chong Kun Dang Healthcare’s revenue marked 2.24 billion won, which was the highest among pharmaceutical firms selling functional foods.

Dongkook’s Nature’s Vitamin Shop products sold 2.19 billion won, and Sanofi’s Cenovis goods, 1.4 billion won.

By distribution channel, most of Chong Kun Dang Healthcare’s revenue, or 2.12 billion won, came from discount stores. Up to 99 million won sales came from supermarket chains, and an additional 140 million won, from independent supermarkets.

Dongkook’s Nature’s Vitamin Shop sold 1.8 billion won at department stores, 268 million won at discount stores, and 66 million won in supermarket chains.

Sanofi’s Cenovis products sold 878 million won at department stores and 565 million won at discount stores.
