Handok said Tuesday that it has launched Souvenaid, a special medical food product for helping Alzheimer’s patients.

Souvenaid, developed by Nutricia, is a vanilla-flavored drink that stimulates the connection of synapses in the brain by intensively supplying nutrients that may be lacking in patients with mild cognitive impairment and mild Alzheimer's. Nutricia currently markets the product in various countries around the globe such as the U.K., Australia, Germany and Hong Kong.

Nutricia had conducted four clinical trials on 1,322 patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild Alzheimer's disease in Europe and the United States to confirm the efficacy of the drink. In 2017, the company managed to publish a clinical trial result in Lancet Neurology.

“Although many people believe that dementia is an inevitable aging phenomenon, dementia is an illness that needs constant management,” said Chang Hee-hyun, head of the medical nutrition division at Handok. “As dementia has no cure yet and dietary management is important to dementia patients, we hope that Souvenaid will help patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.”

Handok advised patients, who wish to purchase Souvenaid, to consult with doctors before taking the solution. Patients already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s can also buy the drink.

Patients wishing to purchase Souvenaid can do so at local pharmacies, online -- Handok online mall or Nutricia homepage – and via phone calls (1833-9980)
