Six out of 10 people sought improvements in the Korean healthcare system, including improved access to clinics and increased support for health insurance and medical expenses, a government survey showed Friday.

When it came to paying for the changes, though, responses split 60-40, with most willing or okay with paying higher insurance premiums for a better healthcare system. Of the 60 percent willing to burden higher insurance premiums, those in their 30s and 40s were more willing to pay than the rest.

Most seniors over 60 said they disagreed with paying higher insurance premiums, with 74 percent saying they would not or were unsure they would pay more.

The survey also showed 70 percent of Koreans received treatment at a medical institution last year, with the elderly going to the hospital the most. Around 4 percent said they could not get treatment because of high medical expenses.

As for medical services, 90 percent said that they got treated on the day of their choice and waited an average of 20 minutes before seeing their doctor. Most went to a clinic nearby or familiar to them, it said.

The survey also indicated eight out of 10 Koreans positively viewed services provided by both doctors and nurses.
