A 35-year-old Korean mother has given birth to triplets two months apart, thanks to a surgery that allowed a premature delivery for one baby and delayed birthing of the remaining two, Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) said Thursday.

“This is the first time we had delayed delivery for more than eight weeks,” a hospital staff said.

SNUH said that the first baby had to be delivered prematurely on Nov. 13 due to a premature rupture of the amniotic membrane, but a surgical operation allowed the remaining two to stay within the mother’s womb for further growth.

SNUH Professors Jun Jong-kwan (left) and Kim Lee-kyung (right) share a moment with the mother of the triplets (seated).

“I decided to [elect the procedure] to give the remaining twins time to grow, considering the first birth came too early,” said Professor Jun Jong-kwan from SNUH’s OBGYN Department.

The delayed interval birth surgery - used to make the fetus stay in the mother’s womb for as long as possible - sutures the cervix and uses a uterine contraction inhibitor if necessary, the hospital said. The surgery is uncommon and performed only two to three times a year, it added.

The second and third babies were delivered on Monday in good health, the overseeing doctor said. “I am happy the twins were also delivered in good health and hope that many babies are born healthy this year,” Jun added.

One of the three babies has a different birth year from the other two and will likely begin school one year earlier, too, the hospital said.
