The Ministry of Health and Welfare said on Friday it has additionally designated three hospitals as “intermediary clinical centers” to offer state-supported advanced medical devices. The three are Konyang University Hospital, Asan Medical Center, and Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital.

Konyang hospital will get to use medical devices for the elderly patients’ eyes, ears, head, and neck, while Asan Medical Center will receive automated medical devices that integrate medical information. Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital will get medical devices to facilitate the “aging-friendly” medical service industry.

The government’s program of supporting medical device at intermediary clinical centers aims to make use of hospitals’ infrastructure to set up an intermediary clinical center, enhance the development of the value-added medical device, and build a “research and development econology.”

Currently, seven hospitals have been designated as intermediary clinical centers, receiving the government’s support for medical devices. With the latest pick of the three, 10 intermediary clinical centers will receive the government’s support by 2023.

The seven intermediary clinical centers have offered 691 cases of consultations and all-stage pre-clinical and clinical trials at 92 institutions to date. The government’s program helped 22 medical devices to obtain approval including high-risk infectious agent DNA test reagent and manual orthopedic traction device.

“Through the selection the new three hospitals, we have established a nation-wide medical device supporting system,” a health ministry official said.

“With the hospitals’ expertise, demand, and companies’ research and development combined, the program will be an opportunity to boost Korean medical device’s credibility and make another leap forward.”
