The Ministry of Health and Welfare said Wednesday that it has finalized its selection of the 17 regional trauma centers after picking Jinju Gyeongsang National University Hospital as the final regional trauma center

Regional trauma center refers to a trauma specialist institution that provides optimal treatment for severe trauma patients, including multiple injuries caused by traffic accidents, falls, and excessive bleeding, all year round.

The ministry has been promoting the establishment of regional trauma centers since December 2012, to improve the preventable mortality rate of severely traumatized patients, which was too high compared to advanced countries.

Currently, nine out of the 17 regional trauma centers are operational -- Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Wonju Severance Christian Hospital, Dankook University Hospital, Mokpo Hankook Hospital, Ajou University Hospital, Daejeon Eulji Medical Center, Chonnam National University Hospital, Ulsan University Hospital, and Pusan National University Hospital. Other centers are also expected to open in the next few years.

The ministry plans to support the regional trauma centers with an 8 billion won ($7.3 million) fund for facility and equipment, and an additional 720 million won to 2.76 billion won annually to cover operation funds.

By providing aggressive operational support, the ministry plans to ensure that serious trauma patients can receive treatment within an hour from anywhere in the country.
