SNU, SKKU ranked within top 100 medical schools

The Times Higher Education (THE) has published a ranking of the top 500 universities for clinical, pre-clinical and health studies in more than 50 countries worldwide, with Seoul National University ranking 54th and Sungkyunkwan University ranking 57th.

Established in 1971, THE became known for publishing the annual Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings, which first appeared in November 2004. As a prestigious global university evaluation agency, THE is the data provider underpinning university excellence in every continent across the world.

The weightings for the clinical, pre-clinical and health ranking are teaching environment with 27.5 percent, the volume and reputation of research with 27.5 percent, citations influence at 35 percent, international outlook on staff and students with 7.5 percent, and innovation at 2.5 percent.

The Oxford University Medical School in the U.K. is ranked first among the top 500 medical schools in the world, followed by the University of Cambridge and Harvard University.

Among the 500 universities, nine national medical schools are listed, including Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Korea University College of Medicine, Hanyang University College of Medicine, and Ulsan University College of Medicine.

The Seoul National University ranked at 54th place among the world's top medical schools and Sungkyunkwan University ranked 57th.

Yonsei University was tied for the 151st place, and Kyung Hee University was also tied for the 201st spot. Following them were Hanyang University and Ulsan University for the common 301st place, and Ewha Medical University, Chung-Ang University, and Kyunghee University, for the joint 401st.

Of these, Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan Medical University ranked in the top 100 for three consecutive years.

However, SNU’s ranking slightly fell from 52th last year, while Sungkyunkwan University jumped from 72th in the ranking last year.

In Asia, a total of 12 universities ranked in the top 100. China's Tsinghua University ranked highest with 25th, followed by the National University of Singapore at 28th and the University of Hong Kong at 31st. In Japan, the University of Tokyo ranked 32nd, Kyoto University at 40th, and Osaka University at 92nd place.

The United States fields the highest number of universities ranked in the top 100 with 31 schools. In the top 10, six universities are from the United States, including Stanford University at fourth, Johns Hopkins University at sixth, and University of California and Columbia University at seventh and eighth.
