2 KIST professors named as ‘world's top 1% researcher'

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) said Thursday that Drs. Kwon Ik-chan and Kim Kwang-myung of its Biomedical Research Institute were selected as the top 1 percent researchers in the world for the fourth consecutive year.

Clarivate Analytics is an independent company that owns and operates a collection of subscription-based services that focuses on scientific and academic research, patent analytics and regulatory standards, pharmaceutical and biotech intelligence, trademark protection, domain brand protection and intellectual property management.

Presented by Clarivate Analytics in 2014, researchers use the Web of Science database to investigate the number of citations of papers published by researchers around the world every academic year. Highly Cited Researchers are ranked among the top 1 percent of researchers who are recognized as world-class researchers each year.

Clarivate Analytics recently evaluated more than 130,000 papers from 900 institutions registered for 11 years from January 2005 to December 2015 and more than 3,300 Highly Cited Researchers in 21 fields of the sciences, and social sciences were selected.

Of the 28 Korean national researchers selected in 2017, only six were selected for the fourth consecutive year, including Drs Kwon Ik-chan and Kim Kwang-myung.

The 28 Korean national researchers were categorized in the fields of pharmacology & toxicology, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, materials science, biology and biochemistry, agricultural sciences, computer science, physics and clinical medicine.

Dr. Kwon Ik-chan has published more than 400 articles on SCI theses, including Nature, as an author of Theragnosis research and has cited up to 19,000 citations to date. Kwon also won the Academy Award in the 13th Korea Science Award in 2014.

Dr. Kim Kwang-myung is a prominent researcher in the field of nanomedicine research and has published over 110 papers as a significant author and correspondent for the past five years. Kim is selected as one of the top 10 science and technology news by the Korea Federation of Science and Technology Societies in 2014 for research on the "Development of fusion protein nanoparticles for cancer diagnosis/treatment."

The other four researchers selected for the fourth consecutive year were Park Kwang-sik박광식 of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Dongduk Women's University동덕여대, Yoon Ju-young윤주영 of the Department of Chemistry at Ewha Womans University이화여대, Cho Yeol-je조열재 of the Department of Mathematics at Gyeongsang National University경상대, and Rodney S. Ruoff of the Department of Chemistry at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology울산과학기술원.

The United States fields the highest number of authors, at 1,661, a 13 percent increase on the 2016 listing. The United Kingdom ranks second with almost 350 entries. China is gaining fast in third place, with the highest growth of any nation, showing a 34 percent jump to 237 authors.
