Seoul National University Hospital has unfairly given disadvantages to job applicants who neither graduated the Seoul National University College of Medicine nor served as a trainee at the SNUH or Seoul National University Bundang Hospital.

The Board of Audit and Inspection said on Wednesday that SNUH’s recruitment process for filling the posts of vacant physicians was problematic.

The SNUH’s personnel policy states that the hospital should notify of a job opening for everyone, ensure a fair opportunity for applying and set a competition-based recruitment process.

However, the audit discovered that the SNUH and SNUBH had their division heads recommend a physician, went through a review by the screening committee of professors and physicians, and finally hired the recommended one. Out of 102 meetings of the screening committee, 97 times were paper-based. Most of the physicians picked by the hospital had division heads' support.

“SNUH and SNUBH did not allow a fair job opportunity for physicians who did not attend SNU or who did not receive medical training as a resident or a clinical instructor trainee at SNUH or SNUBH because they graduated from other universities,” the BAI said.

The BAI ordered the heads of SNUH and SNUBH to correct the practice to ensure a fair and transparent recruitment of physicians including professors and clinical instructors.
