Samsung Medical Center (SMC) has agreed with Microsoft Korea to build a Korean artificial intelligence (AI) precision healthcare system using Azure, a cloud platform based on Microsoft's AI, the hospital said Monday.

The memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies calls for analyzing medical data in the cloud, optimizing clinical decision making and establishing disease-specific prediction models.

Microsoft Korea will provide the IT infrastructure for medical data processing and analysis, while SMC will promote three AI pilot research projects based on genome data, image data, and sleep data based on it.

Developing a deep-learning system will predict the lung fibrosis diagnosis accuracy by using image data such as X-rays, the hospital said. By also developing a deep learning algorithm based on sleep data to select appropriate data for predicting sleep apnea and predicting future outbreaks, it is likely to increase the survival rate of cancer patients and improve the prediction level, it added.

At the same time, SMC has developed a medical research information platform that has been actively pursuing to build a medical AI infrastructure. Based on Microsoft's latest artificial intelligence algorithms and massive cloud infrastructures and using the big systematic data of SMC that includes medical care and health checkup information, the two companies have continuously developed AI models for disease-specific AI diagnosis, early detection of cancer disease and AI diagnosis technology.

The agreement is not just about providing a system, but it is also more meaningful for the medical staff to use the system. Microsoft Korea will provide systematic education that includes basic courses and deepening courses to improve the AI utilization capacity of the SMC’s medical staff, which has the largest number of gene researchers and data among domestic medical institutions.

"We are confident that Samsung Medical Center and Microsoft will collaborate in the medical AI field to identify potential cloud-based AI research that is expected to be activated in the future,” said Kwon Oh-jung권오정, director of SMC. "We look forward to continuing to work together to build AI-based precision medical systems.”

Ko Soon-dong고순동, CEO of Microsoft Korea, has also expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

"The signing of this MOU is meaningful in that it meets medical and IT technologies and provides practical solutions to improve the quality of life,” he said. "By actively supporting Microsoft's world-class AI, machine learning, and cloud technologies, we will help Samsung Medical Center achieve stable and successful digital transformation in the medical field.”
