“Knowledge” is the most important element for people engaged in bio and healthcare industry, a survey showed, reflecting the sector’s characteristics of having to come up with the state-of-the-art product.

According to the inquiry of 300 companies regarding turnover conducted by Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning(KISTEP)한국과학기술기획평가원, the respondents cited the growing demand for “knowledge” as the essential ability required of people engaged in bio industry.

The survey covered five areas -- bio and healthcare, ICT fusion, high-tech new materials, energy industry, and high-quality consumer goods – as the primary new growth engines.

Its results showed the respondents emphasized the importance of “personality” most in all industries and predicted the demand for “knowledge” would be highest in bio and healthcare fields.

Specifically, most companies in the bio and healthcare fields wanted people who have knowledge in one area and hands-on ability at work.

The pollsters presented four types of talents in science and technology fields: type one for people who have one major knowledge; type two for people who have one major knowledge and have experience to create new values with the knowledge in the field; type three for people who have more than two major knowledge or broad knowledge in other areas; and type four for people who have more than two major knowledge and broad knowledge in other sectors, and have experience to create new values with the knowledge in the field.

Corporate respondents selected the “type four” talents in the ICT fusion area but preferred the “type two” people in the bio and healthcare areas.

Some bio companies are emphasizing the importance of knowledge in their wanted ads.

"Our management values are based on quality, law-abiding spirit, safety, and cost competitiveness,” said an official at Samsung Biologics삼성바이오로직스 in the company’s recruitment event for the first half of 2017. “We want people who have broad knowledge and expertise in the related areas.

Cellinbio셀인바이오, a developer of cosmetics and rheumarthritis, also said on its website, "People who majored in natural science didn’t have enough experiences in investment and management so that their jobs were limited to research positions. But the bio industry requires an in-depth understanding of nature and vital phenomenon and philosophy. If people who majored in natural sciences subjects have technology related to businesses, they can show outstanding results."
