Combining Health Insurance Big Data to AINHIS plans to expand subjects for the data and decrease commission

NHIS (National Health Insurance Service) will develop a model to predict diseases in combination of big data about medical insurance and AI (Artificial Intelligence).

General Director Jeong Seung-lyeal at Big DATA Steering Dept. said on the 14th “NHIS will invest 1billion won to develop a model to predict major diseases such as cardiac diseases and brain diseases etc. by combining health insurance big data and AI.” It will make a contract with a related company to develop the model.

It will invest about 10.2billion won to build up a big data platform. It will open a remote research and analysis system, expand mobile-based self-care services, and provide a service to link health index by region based on the platform to be built by December

NHIS has used health insurance big data in various fields. With child abuse emerged as a serious problem in Korean society, it has tried to find children who didn’t get medical checkups or weren’t vaccinated. Therefore, it could find 2 children who have been abused. Big data has been used to propose a policy to overcome low birth rate. It analyzed documents related to subfertility and suggested a proposal to expand health insurance for patients with subfertility to overcome low birth rate.

It plans to expand subjects who can use big data and decrease commission. It provided a total of 734 information from July 2014 to 2016 and earned 660million won in commission. The number of annual data has increased from 78 to 456. Therefore, it opened 8 additional analysis centers nationwide in 2016. And also, it hired experts and invested about 448million won to make use of the information. The commission to use the big data will be dropped by about 40% beginning of April.

The general director said, “NHIS plans to provide much real data for healthcare researches. We will beef up security and protect personal information by replacing resident registration numbers to serial numbers.”
