The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced Tuesday that it will enhance safety standards for the use of liquid nitrogen by revising “Standards and Specifications for Food Additives.”

The latest move came after a recent incident involving a 12-year-old boy consuming liquid nitrogen from nitrogen-injected crackers called “yonggari snack.” New standards will be added to prevent liquid nitrogen from remaining in the product, the ministry said.

The ministry’s safety management measures also include new standards for cleaner agents, calcium pyrophosphate, and revision of usage level of 136 items such as color pigments.

Calcium pyrophosphate has been designated as a new product, with its standards and specifications newly established so that it can be used as a swelling agent and an acidity adjusting agent in food production.
