Although the genome analysis industry is increasing dramatically, Korean equipment related to genome analysis is practically nonexistent.

According to Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology(KRIBB)'s ‘Next Generation Sequencing(NGS)’ report, all 126 pieces of NGC equipment introduced into the country in 2014 were foreign products. According to the report, 71 were from Illumina, 35 were from Life Technologies, and 20 were from Roche.

Genome Analysis KRIBB states that, "There is not one piece of NGS equipment made in Korea. Businesses related to NGS preprocessing automative systems (which automate steps occurring before and after genome analysis) are equally nonexistent." KRIBB added that, "Korea currently relies heavily on foreign markets for genome analysis which offer detailed or personalized medical treatment."

KRIBB pointed out that, "Progress has been made by domestic colleges and instituions. However, there are almost no local businesses related to developing NGS equipment."

To foster long term growth, KRIBB pointed to the necessity for fostering the strategic development of bio equipment in order to localize NGS equipment, saying that "attention should be heeded to the localization of analytical equipment, reagents, and analytical software."

The institute explained that, "localization of sequencing analysis equipment are not feasible in a short period of time. The same applies to promotion related businesses. They require long-term strategy. Funds for developing the industry and for businesses that contribute to the development of analytical software are a necessity."

KRIBB believes that Korea needs to "develop technical standards and pioneer a revolution in terms of platform, service, and content" while "comprehensively examining systematic and ethical issues such as information security."
